  1. We recently had a big snowstorm in toronto,it was the biggest one we have had in three years!! Due to this storm our catholic disrict school board announced that schools will be cancelled for the day. This means students don't have to go to school. Many people are overjoyed that they don't have to go to school to do work. But the school board didn't cancel school for our joy, they cancelled it for safety reasons. I think it was a good idea they cancelled school. It snowed about 5 cm and by the end of the day it is supposed to be at least 10 cm. Yesterday was very cold and all the melting snow turned to ice, and now that it snowed the snow is covering ice patches. If someone slipped the unjuries could be very serious. Another reason is if people travel by car, and if they dont have snow tires, the tires spin, and collect snow, then it maks it hard to drive or turn, you would be mostly sliding around the road and you could get into a car crash. Which does not just affect you but can affect another family! Another reason is if you need to take the highway to get to school (or even on any road) you can't see the line that seperates the lanes, so you wouldn't be able to see which lane to go into and you could crash. If you leave your car outside while it snows, snow layers the top of your car and when you drive, if the snow falls off, it can hit the car behind you which is very dangerous. Also if you take the highway and your car brakes down, because of the cold and the snow, things can go very bad! If the school was open, while the storm was going on, it can knock off the power and you could freeze, or if you call home, your parents would get delayed because of the slow traffic etc. For all these reasons I am glad the school was closed.

  2. In my opinion I think that the cancellation of classes was a good thing not only because I am enjoying the day off but also because of the horrible traffic. For example, my sister goes downtown for school every morning on bus and subway and it usually takes her an hour to an hour and a half but today it took two hours to get down. I know that it does not help that much since the parents still need to drive to work and other stuff but it is not the greatest idea to drive around in this type of weather. In fact, I would say if you started driving in spring of 2009 or later not to drive today because compared to last year this is ridiculous. I probably am not one of the happiest kids at home though because I still had to go out and shovel 25 centimeters of snow.

  3. I think the cancellation of school to day was a good idea. When I woke up this morning I did not think so at first. This morning when I got up, I expected the worst. I thought it was going to be snowing so hard that all you could see was a giant wall of snow, but I did not. So after I got up and looked outside it was not snowing a lot, so I thought the news over reacted and they cancelled school for no reason, it had snowed worse before and we had to go. Then I waited about an hour and it really started to snow hard. Luckly my parents didn't go to work today they stayed home because the rodes were so bad. Even though I have an older brother, guess who had to shovel the snow? Me and my dad because my brother is a lazy, lazy boy. Guess who had to shovel after dinner, since it snowed some more, my brother, ha, ha.It was a good idea to cancel schools to day because it acted as a day of rest after working on the book report for the Wednesday Wars.

  4. I think that the canceling of class was a great idea. I think so because, well because I didn't need to go to school, I got to watch TV all day and I spent time with my brother and sisters. When I woke up, I woke up like every school morning, I dragged myself out of bed. I got changed and went downstairs to eat breakfast. While I was eating breakfast, my sister came screaming down the stairs as if an elephant driving a monster truck ran over her foot. But the screaming was for joy! As soon as I heard the words "school","cancelled" and the word "isn't" not in it I was extremely happy. I felt bad for the mailman, so I decided to shovel a path and then my dad would use the snowblower when he came home. I bundled up and went outside ,looking for the shovel. I lost it. The last time I shoveled, I through it on the lawn. Then it snowed. Deep. So I went back inside, unbundled and watched TV for the rest of the day. I thought it was THE best snow day ever! So, as you can now see, I think that having a snow day is a VERY AWESOME idea.

  5. I think the cancellation of the school was a good idea because some people have to travel far to get to school and there would be lots of traffic. For example, my mom could've gone to work yesterday, but she didn't since there would be lots of traffic on the road and it would take to long. It would also be very dangerous to drive since the roads were icy and hard to see. But the storm wasn't as bad as I expected because the way the weather man described it made me feel sort of worried of what's about to come. Like how the weather man said that about 20-30 centimetres of snow was about to fall in Toronto. But he was way off. Only 13-19 centimetres of snow fell in Toronto. One thing I don’t get is why they cancelled all the schools in Toronto. They really over exaggerated because I remember 3 years ago, there was a much bigger snow storm and our school wasn’t cancelled. I even remember going to school on that day when I was in grade 4. I remember how I and other few students who attended class that day did nothing but play in the gym and on the computers. Anyways, the cancellations of the schools in Toronto were a good idea.

  6. Toronto recently experienced a snow ‘storm’, the weather organization called for 20-30 centimeters of snow but only 13-19 centimeters. I think that the cancellation of classes and schools was a big misunderstanding and unnecessary. The Toronto Catholic District School Board had decided to close classes the first time in l1 years because they saw the snow ‘storm’ coming toward the city. I think that the snow storm that the media and weather organizations announced was hyped up and exaggerated. The enormous snow blizzard that we were warned for never occurred. Toronto did avoid a big snow storm, because the snow storm had split and Toronto luckily missed all the snow. There was 20-30 centimeters of snow announced to fall, but only about half that amount snowed. I am glad that there was less snow to shovel though. By the time that kids were prepared for school, the schools had already been closed, but the roads were clear and plowed. In my opinion there was no reason for school to be cancelled. Buses could have been closed and people would have to drive cautiously, but there have been worse snow storms, where the school hasn’t been closed. The school board probably were embarrassed and regretted the cancellations of classes after the snow had stopped falling and the roads were cleared around 8:45. In my opinion all the snow storm charades were exaggerated and hyped up by the media. I also think that we depend too much on what to expect for our inaccurate weather watchers. Almost half of the predictions by the weather people inaccurate and never transpire.

I did have a wonderful snow day and enjoyed building snow forts in my backyard; I didn’t enjoy the shoveling as much though. This is a different perspective of the snow fall that recently caused the cancellations of classes, and how it can be perceived differently and viewed in a different way.

  7. I think the cancellatation was good and bad. It was good because we missed a school day and because well there was a snow storm. The snow was really deep and there would be a lot of traffic. I stayed in because the snowstorm and it was probably really cold. I thought it was bad because it didn't seem like a really big snow storm. I've seen a worst snowstorm but this wasn't that bad. I mostly thought it was a good idea to cancel school.

  8. On Wednesday, Catholic and public schools cancelled classes that day due to a snowstorm. I had first heard about the snowstorm that week on Monday and heard there was going to be about 20-30 cm of snow. The first thing I was thinking of was how was I going to get to school if the busses were cancelled? That storm was basically the buzz on the news. I was worried the night of Tuesday because I didn’t know what to expect the next morning. During that Tuesday night, I predicted the next day, school would be cancelled but I really doubted it. I was just hoping and hoping that night, it would be a snow day. During the middle of the night, I kept hearing snowplows driving through the highway (the highway is right out of my window), which I thought was thunder. The news and reporters made the snowstorm sound like the world was going to blow up or something and we were all going to die. Literally they made the storm sound violent and we would get so much snow, it got people really worried! On Wednesday morning at 6:50, my mom came upstairs while I was sleeping and said that school was cancelled that day. At that moment I sprang up from my bed, shocking my mom, and excitedly squealed, “REALLY?!?” Later on when I went down for breakfast I looked outside the window, I was kind of disappointed because I expected more of a storm, and I was kind of thinking, “Seriously? They cancelled school for this?” I didn’t know how much snow there would be, until around noon where it really started to snow! At least I got time to play in the snow, and as I was in my backyard the snow was high enough to reach the seat of my bench in my backyard.

I think canceling school on Wednesday, was just for the sake of safety ness. Although we expected a good 30 cm of snow, we actually only got somewhere from 13 cm to 19 cm of snow. Some people thought it was ridiculous canceling classes because the weather hadn’t been as bad as predicted. It was a relief to those who had to travel far or use the highways though. Traffic could of occurred and skidding on un-salted ice could have happened too. I guess it would be hard to see driving, and people who wait for the TTC would have to stand in the cold for a while. Some police had warned the drivers not to drive and to stay off the roads unless it was an absolute must due to snow blowing and icy roads. From some other people’s point of view, the cancellation was a disruption of classes and activities and simply was not worth it. The last time the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board cancelled classes were in the storm of 1999. 12 years!! Well, it’s better safe than sorry! Anyway, I personally did not mind having classes cancelled and enjoyed playing in the snow in my backyard. (:

  9. Torontonians got a little taste of brutal winter weather a few days ago. It snowed about 10 cm when they were predicting about 30 cm. The schools were closed down and I do believe that it was a decision that had been made before the storm. I do think that it was not a day that was required to be off but it was nice to get an unexpected break. Of course, if the storm was what they predicted then that would be a better decision. Plus it would have been worse if we went to school and then around noontime our parents would have to come pick us up. Although ‘snow day’ has a nice ring to it and it sounds nice to any student, it does have its negatives for other people. Driving conditions are bad and many injuries can happen not just because of careless driving but also because of slippery streets. My father had to drive out to Mississauga that day and he said that the roads had barely any cars on them. He did not have any problems on the road, thankfully. I think that people might have been melodramatic about this horrible storm. We Canadians have survived through worse.

When I woke up a little later then usual that day I had no idea that it was a snow day. My siblings were still walking around in there PJ’s and I’m sitting there thinking “What is going on here?” Curious to see how much snow we got I look out the window only to be disappointed. We did not get enough snow for snow day. Then my mom finally clues me in on the fact that it is a snow day. Yes, I was happy but another part of me was thinking “We’re missing school for this? What is this world coming to?” Well, of course I had to shovel the snow but I also got to play in it. The only thing that I regret doing that day is forgetting to make hot chocolate. All in all it was a nice unforeseen little vacation that put both teachers and students in a good mood.

  10. Last week I went to bed wishing it would be a snow day. So i did and when i woke up it was i asked my mom and she said that it was a school day. But when we put on the news and it said no school for catholic district school bored and i said OH YEAAH.
It was like a vacation that was on a shool day it was the best!

  11. I think the cancelation of school was a good and bad thing. I found it a good thing because students got to stay home. None of the parents had to waste their time by trying to get the children to school on time. I also found it a bad thing because some children had to shovel their driveway with ALL the SNOW on it. Also, the cancelation was kind of a bad thing because it had stopped snowing before the time school had started, so some people wouild have made it if they wanted to go.

  12. I am glad that we got a fun snow-day in the middle of the week. I am glad that we had a snow day because if we didn't it would have been very dangerous for some pedestrian if the roads were icy. Maybe the car didn't have snow tires and when they try to stop they don't. They could collide with the pedestrian and they would need medical help. Even though I was using the snow-day to my advantage, I was still wondering what we would of done in school. The news reporters were predicting 30 cm of snow when only 10 cm arrived. Some places like England close down everything when they have a centimeter of snow. Are they CRAZY! I think they will live when the bottom's of their boots get wet. If the board hadn't had a snow day, I think it wouldn't be safe for us kids. Also cars would have to go half the speed of a speed limit in order to drive safely.
I remember I was all dressed and downstairs eating on that day. My sister nearly fell when running down the stairs. She yelled "IT'S A SNOW DAY!" I thought she was just joking when my little brother told me so too. "Oh he's in on it too." I thought. Then finally my mother came down and told me that it was a snow day. I looked out the window and saw some snow. Not even a lot. Was the board insane? I mean if you saw how much snow Toronto had before you'd get my point and I'm wasn't against it either. I couldn't believe it. My first snow day! I was ecstatic! The board made a very good decision making it a snow day.

  13. I think it was a good decision to cancel both TDSB and TCDSB schools for the day so kids could enjoy the nice winter “storm” for once in 12 years. But not just the two major boards were closed, but some colleges were closed too. It doesn’t make sense that they would cancel both class and buses. If it were that weather expected sooner, then only school buses would have just been canceled. Canceling these schools gives extra space for transportation for the TTC of Go transits. Even though we had expected more snow, we received less snow but still a free day to relax at home.

When I woke up, it was around 6:60am. I wanted to wake up early to see if was a snow day or if it wasn’t I would get early for school. When I found out it was a snow day, I went back to sleep for another hour. I checked CP24 and said both TCDSB and TDSB boards both canceled classes I celebrated with my sisters to go eat some hot chocolate and watched movies on demand. That was mostly my Wednesday snow day.

  14. In my opinion this snow day was kind of dumb, i thought it was dumb because in the past we have had more snow but never a snow day, I do not think it was a good idea to cancel school because we have a lot to do and we are missing more and more since they have cancelled school on a day where it isn't cold or the snow isn't that high, there for i do not like the snow day because i would rather go to schol and do work then stay at home and do nothing, we missed a lot of subjects that day such as Band and Phys.Ed and more inportantly math.

I do not think the snow day was a good idea because we stayed home when the weather wasnt that bad,the snow wasn't that bad and we would have missed a fun day at school playing around at recess with our friends in the snow.

  15. I think the cancellation of Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board was a good idea. It was good since all the students got to say home. This is something that we should all enjoy. Also because it would be dangerous for parents to be driving on such icy roads. So less people on the roads makes less accidents. For most of the students it was like having on extra Sunday in the middle of the week. All the students would of probably had lots of fun staying at home, doing nothing. So I am very grateful that they canceled school.
