  1. The federal elections took place on May 2nd 2011. Ths elections were amazing; so intense, fierce but still very interesting. Each candidate had their share of popularity and all had a fair chance of winning, but it all came down to the candidate who put the most effort into this and won the people over. Yesterday(may 2nd) was voting, im sure everyone was filled with suspense, in a few hours one of these people could be a new leader. After an intense day of thousands of people voting for who they thought was the best, the results came in and the winner was: STEPHEN HARPER!! Stephen Harper was our new mayor I'm sure he'll make a great one too! :D

  2. The recent federal election results have transformed Canada’s social and political landscape. On May 2, 2011 the conservative party obtain the most seats, 167, to create a majority government. For the next four years, Stephen Harper will guide the country’s government. The Canadian’s votes for a conservative majority will be essential for the conservative government to have the right authority to make the choices that will benefit Canada’s citizens most effectively. The last time there was a majority government was with the liberals. This year the liberals had their worst results with only 34 seats since around 1984, lead by Michael Ignatieff. Half of the liberal’s seats were obtained by the NDP party lead by Jack Layton, the leader of the new opposition government. His party had their most successful turn out ever with 102 seats. In my opinion a majority government is a double edged sword. I think that the voters made the right decision to vote a conservative majority so there is less conflict and clash between the parties concerning their authority’s and power. But with a majority government the party now has the authority and permission to do as they’d like and act to how they see fit without any boundaries or input from other parties. With all this power it might overrule what the Canadians want from their government. Even though the incredible NDP party is the opposition government, they really have no input in the decisions that the conservatives make, in my opinion. Since the conservatives won a majority government they don’t need the advice from the NDP party, a majority government means they make the decisions for the country and they don’t have to consider using the suggestions from the opposition. The NDP party is still very inexperienced to make decisions, with many university students in their party. With different circumstances for example, if the conservatives had the most seats but didn’t obtain the majority votes, the opposition would have a vital role in the decisions made by the government. Hopefully Stephen won’t have any difficulty doing what he needs to do, since the opposition is very inexperienced. Overall I think Canada is in the right hands and management with the conservatives and Stephen Harper. I look forward to seeing what Harper does with his authority.

  3. On Monday May 2nd 2011, Canadians voted for the conservative party. Me and my family were watching the election that day because we wanted to see if Jack Layton won. I feel that we would have been better off with Jack Layton because in my opinion he cares more about the people. Although this was historic because it was the first conservative majority, it would have been even more historic if it was the first NDP prime minister. In my riding(Pickering Scarborough East)I wanted Dan McTeague of the Liberals to win but he lost to conservative party also. Both Micheal Ignatieff and Gilles Ducepp stepped down from being the leaders of their parties because of how many seats they lost in the house of commons. In total the Bloc de Quebecois lost 43 seat and the Liberals dropped the second to third place. Even though Harper is an effective prime minister I still think that Jack Layton would be a better prime minister.

  4. On May 2nd, a new leader was selected. The waiting was intense and it was cruciating watching and waiting for our favourites to be announced. Some people's hope was dashed but some people jumped for joy as Stephen Harper was annonced as our new mayor. I hope that all the other candidates don't give up at being amazing leaders. Stephen Harper must be filled with pride for himself and sympathy for others. I say with hope that he does a wonderful job.

  5. On Monday, May 2nd, 2011 I was watching BT television. We were watching to see if NDP would win for Scarborough Centre and I think they won. I was going with my parents. My parents were voting for NDP but they came in 2nd. I just wanted either Conservative or NDP to win.

  6. On Monday May 2, Canadians voted for Stephen Harper (which I find odd because Harper was in office before the election) I was hoping for Jack Layton to be elected because I've never seen the NDP in office. But that doesn't matter because the NDP was declared the official opposition. Although I think that these next few years will be interesting, it doesn't matter who's prime minister to me because I don't pay taxes.

  7. Recently, Canada held another federal election. On May 2nd, 2011, it was announced that Stephen Harper of the Conservative Party had been successful in remaining Prime minister. The conservatives gained 14 more seats and went from 124 to 138. The opposition party however, were the NDP’s with their leader Jack Layton. This was their first ever time being the opposition. Although the Conservatives were very successful in having more than half the seats necessary, the NDP’s number rose by quite a lot! Having gained 66 new seats, they jumped from 36 to 102. As for the Liberal party, the former opposition, they had 77, but had dropped by more than 50% leaving them with 43 members. The Bloc Quebecois and the Green party trail behind with having 4 and 1 members. I hope the Conservatives will do well for the next 4 years and don’t take advantage of their power. I’m sure Stephen is extremely happy and as well as the NDP’s being successful enough to obtain opposition. Personally, I’m not that interested in politics and such, but hopefully Canada feels in safe hands with their decisions and that the conservatives also make good choices.

  8. On May 2nd 2011, the federal elections took place. Stephen Harper was re-elected as Prime Minister and was given his first majority goverment in Parliament. This election has been historical. It's our first Conservative Majority Government with a NDP minority. In the House of Commons the Conservative won 167 seats, NDP won 102 seats, Liberals won 34 seats, Bloc Quebecois won 4, and the Green Party won 1 seat. I thought this federal election was very different then the others, but either way i hope Canada has made the right choice.

  10. In 2008 Stephan Harper was elected prim minister with a minority government. Recent events have caused another election. For several weeks the leaders have been doing commercials and promoting themselves. on May 2nd Stephan Harper was voted prim minister again except this time he won with a majority government. Now Harper is free to govern our country without any conflict from the other parties. This year history was made with a Conservative majority and an N.D.P minority. The N.D.P won the most seats in their history, on the other hand, the Liberals won the least amount in their history. Stephen Harper has been the Conservative leader since March 20 2004. In the last election he had 143 seats and now he has 167. The leader of the N.D.P, Jack Layton has been their leader since January 24 2003. In the previous election he had 37 seats, now he has 102. The Liberal party leader, Michael Ignatieff recently resigned. He was the leader since May 2 2009. The liberals had 77 seats and now they have 37. Gilles Duceppe leader of the Bloc Quebecois also resigned. He has been the leader since March 15 1997. In the 2008 election he had 49 seats, now in 2011 he has 4. Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green party, was the leader from August 27, 2006. The Green party won their first seat this election. I hope Stephen Harper makes a good prim minister, but i am pretty sure he will since he has been doing it for so long.
